The Era of Rivalry: American Power and the Contemporary World Order

Course Description

The rise of China has put an end to the “holiday from history” the United States seemed to enjoy in the 1990s. Now, the future of the international order is unclear as great power rivalry simmers and new centers of power emerge. How do we understand the international order? What are the most fundamental threats to America’s leadership in the world? This Policy Certificate Program will examine the theoretical foundations, policy implications, and practical realities of the new era of rivalry with a view toward American leadership. Participants will assess the strategic logic of contemporary competition and confront the challenges of decision-making through an immersive simulation exercise.

Simulation

During an immersive crisis scenario led by Professor Peter Campbell, Baylor University, participants will confront the practical realities of strategic decision-making in a rapidly unfolding global confrontation.

Through a series of intensive seminars led by Dr. Rachel Mackey, Hudson Institute, and Mike Watson, Alexander Hamilton Society, participants will examine theoretical perspectives on world order as well as diagnosing the strategic dynamics of the present moment.

Capstone Project

To earn their certificate, candidates showcase their newly gained policy insights by completing a capstone project: either an op-ed or policy memo. Projects are assessed for their strategic soundness, original analysis, and grasp of the policy area.
